Building More Affordable Housing
In addition to our commitment and support of measures to
preserve the existing affordable
housing stock, we believe that the creation of
affordable units is essential to solving the housing crisis. While
new “luxury apartments”
are going up in almost every neighborhood in the city, not nearly enough quality
affordable housing units are being built.
Instead, low-income New Yorkers are being forced to put up with
apartments that have serious health violations like lead, pests, mold, and
leaks - apartments that are neither safe nor secure. These
kinds of unlivable conditions erode the stability and economic vitality of our
families and neighborhoods.
New
York City is in a state of permanent housing shortage. Only
massive construction of permanently affordable housing can
address this longstanding crisis - a crisis which leads to
homelessness, overcrowding and neighborhood destabilization.
Campaigns to increase the supply of new affordable housing have
focused on mandatory inclusionary zoning and reform of the tax
abatement system (421a).
